Literacy Journal: Students will complete an online literacy journal that will include a
review of 30 age-appropriate books and 10 poems. The books and poems must come
from sources other than your textbook.
Part 1: Book Collection
The book collection will include 30 books that are appropriate for infants,
toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children, children with exceptional needs,
and multicultural children.
For each book, the student will
1. List the title of the book, author, publisher, copyright date, and age
range in which the book is appropriate.
2. A picture of the book
3. A four-sentence desсrіption of the book
4. A five-sentence critique of the book explaining if the book would
be effective in promoting early literacy and language development.
The book collection must include the following book categories:
5 books appropriate for infants
5 books appropriate for toddlers
5 books appropriate for preschoolers (ages 3 to 4)
5 books appropriate for school-age children
5 books related to children with exceptional needs
5 books related to multicultural children
Standard 1: Child Development and Learning in Context
1a: Understanding the developmental period of early childhood from birth through age -8
1b: Understanding and valuing each child as an individual
1c: Understanding the ways that child development and the learning process occur in
multiple contexts
Part 2: Poetry Collection
The poetry collection will include 10 poems that are age-appropriate for
preschool children (ages 3-4).
For each poem, the student will
1. List the title of the poem and author
2. A copy of the poem
3. A four-sentence desсrіption of the poem and a four-sentence
desсrіption of how you would present the poem to a preschool
class.

The poem collection must include the following types of poetry:
2 poems that are lyric melodic poetry
2 poems that are narrative poetry
2 poems that are limerick poetry
2 poems that are free verse poetry
2 poems that are nonsense poetry
NAEYC Standard 5: Knowledge, Application, and Integration of Academic Content in the
Early Childhood Curriculum
5a: Understanding content knowledge and resources for the academic disciplines
in an early childhood curriculum.
Instructions: You will complete this assignment in Canvas and each part of the journal
will be submitted separately. Your literacy journal should have:
1. A title page with your name, course name, number, and date.
2. Each journal entry should be double-spaced with one-inch margins and a 12-point
Times New Roman font should be used.
3. Your journal should be organized into two sections (Book Collection and Poetry
Collection).
4. In the Book Collection section, you should have six sub-sections (Infants, Toddlers,
Preschoolers, School Age, Children with Exceptional Needs, and Multicultural
Children) and each entry should be numbered 1-5.
