The first essay, which is linked, is about how blacks and females are portrayed in old horror movies showing the current segregation there was at the time.
The Goodman Source argues that race has nothing to do with genetics and is useless.
The Why Racism article argues that America is still greatly segregated today, and it’s the result of more black people dying because of the vulnerable jobs they have and the communities they live in. How greatly is America still segregated, and what is the reason behind it? Write towards this question. It would be good to go deeper with Seattle and segregation.
Use 2 other sources to which agree or dont agree with the argument.
Why Racism Source:
MP1 placed less emphases on the “ongoing conversation” that your analysis was engaging with and did not allow for you to go beyond course topics/cultural criticism to discuss social difference and inequality. This paper lets you apply the lenses of our course to current events, your fields of interest, and ongoing/present conversations that have high stakes. This paper also will prompt you to explicitly think about your argument as part of a larger context/discourse. You need to tell me what other people are saying and what you think about your argument in relation to theirs. You will be required to explicitly address other people’s opinions on this topic thoroughly, whether they support or disagree with you.
For this paper you will:
Generate a topic that connects to one or more forms of social difference that we’ve discussed in class. As a refresher these have broadly included:

Femininity/Masculinity/Sexism and/or Misogyny
While we have been discussing horror in this course your topic need not be about horror pieces. Your topic must however be clearly defined and accessible to your readership (aka, your classmates and myself). Do the work of explaining this issue/your topic to potential beginners (like yours truly). Many students choose current debates that are ongoing in their fields, political, or cultural events, but you are not required to do this.
Make an argument about your topic: This argument must be clearly stated in a working thesis statement. All body paragraphs (and evidence) must be focused and organized, clearly relating back to your thesis. Think about the occasions and motivations for argument that we discussed in class if you feel lost.
Give an overview of the “ongoing conversation” around your topic and where your argument fits into this conversation. Are you countering conventional knowledge around this topic? Are you adding information that is new? Are you agreeing with specific scholars writing on this topic? Are you creating a “middle ground” where there is none? What does your argument add to this ongoing conversation?
Engage with at least one counter argument. This is a chance for you to show me that you can engage with other people’s takes or opinions and successfully address their concerns while emphasizing that your points are valid. These counterarguments don’t have to be directly “counter” to what you are arguing but they do need to be different than or complicating your points. Ex: If you are talking about a genre or an issue that many people don’t think is serious proving that it is being narrated this way and then showing us why it’s important can count as your “counterargument”.
Clearly articulate the stakes of your argument. This can be connected to Point 3. It should be clear why your argument is important and/or that your argument has an impact. What would your readers miss out on if they DIDN’T read your argument? What do they gain by reading your paper?
Research sources appropriate to your topic, and effectively use those sources as evidence to support your arguments. Although you may use course texts, you must research and use at least four outside sources. Within these four sources a good rule to stick to could be to aim to have at least one argument, background, and exhibit source. Cite all sources using MLA Format. Your paper must include proper parenthetical citations (in text citations) and a Works Cited page.
Remember that a well-researched paper will include a variety of reputable and reliable sources. At least one of your four sources must be a scholarly book or a peer-reviewed article from a scholarly journal. You are encouraged to reference primary sources (political cartoons, advertisements, opinion columns, a short story, etc.).
Formatting: 5-7 pages (1250-1750 words), double-spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins, MLA formatting and Works Cited Page.
