Purpose: To visit (virtually) a field site in South Florida, learn about it, and create
a ‘report’ based on your visit utilizing several different aspects of environmental
science. To get you out in nature, and experience environmental science in
real-life and discover what is in your own backyard!
How:
A. Select a site and ecosystem(s):
 Get information about potential field sites (some examples listed
below) by doing web searches or field visits.
 Please let me know your field site when you choose one to make sure
that it is a good option (don’t wait until last minute – figure it out as
soon as you have a chance!)
 Depending on the field site selected, you will need to describe one or
more ecosystems found in the park. Discuss this with me to ensure
you complete all the requirements.
 For your safety and to ensure a well-informed quality experience, you
should try to make sure that all visits are supervised by park rangers
or tour guides
B. What is NOT considered an acceptable field site:
 Parks where animals are in enclosures (ex: Flamingo Gardens, Zoo
Miami, any aquarium, etc.)
 Primarily recreational parks. These are parks that do not really
have/consists of a small protected natural ecosystem. They are meant
for recreational activities such as jogging paths, sports fields and
others (ex: Markham Park, Tree Tops Park, T.Y. Park, etc.)
C. When selecting a field site keep in mind:
 How much time you have for the project
 Your preferences
 Your school/work/family obligations or schedules
 Transportation
Project Requirements (70 pts. Total):
A. Brief desсrіption of the field site you selected (5 pts)
 Location
 Brief history
 Ecosystem(s) Describe the actual ecological setting of the ecosystem you selected (25
pts)
 Date/time of visit and weather
 Soil
 Hydroperiod/hydropattern (refers to the period of time during
which a wetland is covered by water i.e. when the wet/dry seasons
are)
 Topography (geography, lay of the land)
 Most representative species of flora (plants)
 Most representative species of fauna (animals)
 Possible exotic/invasive species
 Possible indirect evidence of animal presence in the area
C. Human impact (15 pts)
 Positive human impact
 Negative human impact
D. Recommendations (15 pts)
 What is being done to maintain or restore the ecosystem(s) – can
relate to positive human impact
 Your PERSONAL recommendations on what can be done
E. Grammar, editing, format (5 pts)
F. References (5 pts)
Formats:
A. Powerpoint/ Photo Essay
 Take your own photos – keep record so you know what they are! (Initial
ones that are yours)
 Use internet photos also – cite properly
 Use your own words or cite if using material from the internet or
brochure
 All sources used, including material from the Internet, MUST be
referenced in the text and on separate page at the end of your document.
Original images and text are encouraged.
 Minimum 15 slides; no maximum limit
