In the current criminal justice agency, communication is key to ensuring all employees are on the same page. Communication not only exists within the criminal justice agency, but it also exists outside of the agency. It is also important for communication to exist between agencies. As a process in which ideas and information are exchanged, communication must be quick, efficient, and effective (Allen & Sawhney, 2019). There are three reasons for communication to exist:

To coordinate worker efforts
There are three types of communication that can occur between people: Verbal, nonverbal, and written (Allen & Sawhney, 2019). Verbal is the most popular mode of communication among people of the same level in an organization. Written communication is used when evidence of communication is needed. Nonverbal communication occurs without talking or writing. Also, it is the main type of communication where miscommunication may occur.
When using communication, research has shown that certain methods of communication have a different capacity to convey information. Researchers have developed a continuum of communication-based on three characteristics (Allen & Sawhney, 2019):
The ability to handle multiple cues
The ability to facilitate two-way feedback

The ability to establish a personal focus The communication continuum shows that the richest medium of communication is face-to-face because it allows for all three of the characteristics. The next type of rich communication is videoconferencing, followed by a telephone conversation because they do not allow for viewing personal content; however, video conference allows for viewing the person, while a telephone does not. A very popular method of communication that occurs next in this continuum is email. Written letters are at the end of the continuum. Both email and written letters only allow for the cues written on the paper. It can allow for much miscommunication because of the absence of emotions not found in the wording. Many can assume the type of emotion that one who is writing the email is giving, but it may be inaccurate. Email is above written letters on the continuum because it is a quicker form of communication (Allen & Sawhney, 2019).
There are numerous types and directions of organizational communication. Communication in the organization consists of formal and informal methods. Formal communication can have many directions. The conversation can flow vertically (both down and up) and horizontally. There are specific types of horizontal communication. These are the wheel, the chain, the circle, and the all-channel network; not all methods of communication work in all cases (Allen & Sawhney, 2019). Chapter 8 describes all of these. Informal communication also occurs within a criminal justice agency. This type of information does not adhere to a hierarchy or chain of command type of structure. These are open-style communication channels that normally take place using a face-to-face communication style. There are also numerous barriers to communication in a criminal justice agency. There are two broad categories of these barriers, individual and organizational. Organizational barriers may exist when the company does not practice cultural sensitivity

An issue of alleged police brutality occurred while officers were arresting a suspect. The community has become outraged. You, as the police chief, must give a press conference. You must try to keep a riot from occurring at the same time as explaining what may have happened. You only know what your employees are telling you. You have not had a chance to talk to the people involved. You have not had a chance to look at any film of the incident. You must try to dissuade the public from rioting at the same time as explaining what will happen. Note that you will also have to worry about the trust of the populous, as the police may not “automatically be trusted” with the current climate.
