Theoretical Framework/Approach: The theoretical framework section develops the theories or models to be used in the study and shows how the student has developed testable research hypotheses.
This section should include:
• an introduction discussing gaps in the literature, how this study will help fill some of those gaps, and justification for the theory or model to be used in study;
• a summary of the theory or model to be used in the study, including a diagram of the model if appropriate; and
• a statement of hypotheses to be tested.
The length of this section can vary significantly. If you are using a socioeconomic theory to explain human trafficking, then this section would be shorter than if you were developing your own model. Within the lessons overview folder there are examples of five different frameworks recently used by graduate students.

Part One: My research methods for my thesis:

I considered both qualitative and quantitative research methods for my thesis. Qualitative research entails gathering information through methods such as interviews, focus groups, or observations, whereas quantitative research entails gathering numerical information through surveys, experiments, or statistical analyses.

Method chosen and reasons for choice: For my thesis, I chose the quantitative research method after careful consideration. Introduction:

In recent years, social media has become an integral part of adolescent life. While it has several advantages, such as keeping in touch with friends and family, it can also have a negative impact on mental health. Previous research has found a link between teenage social media use and depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. There are, however, gaps in the literature regarding the mechanisms by which social media use affects mental health. This study seeks to fill these gaps by investigating the relationship between adolescent social media use and mental health.

The Social Comparison Theory (SCT) proposed by Festinger serves as the theoretical framework for this study (1954). According to the SCT, individuals should compare themselves to others in order to evaluate their own abilities, opinions, and social status. Users can use social media to compare themselves to others, which can lead to negative social comparisons and have an impact on their mental health. Furthermore, Deci and Ryan (1985) proposed the Self-Determination Theory (SDT), which states that individuals must feel competent, related, and autonomous in order to maintain their mental health. Excessive social media use can reduce feelings of competence and autonomy, leading to a decline in mental health.

Hypotheses: The following hypotheses will be tested in this study based on the theoretical framework:

H1: Teenage social media use is associated with poor mental health.
H2: In teenagers, social comparison mediates the relationship between social media use and mental health.
H3: Autonomy and competence mediate the relationship between adolescent social media use and mental health.

In summary, the purpose of this study is to use a quantitative research method to investigate the relationship between social media use and mental health in teenagers. This study’s theoretical framework is based on the Social Comparison Theory and the Self-Determination Theory, and the hypotheses to be tested are concerned with the mediating role of social comparison, autonomy, and competence.
