  1. MDT and the Rationale for Developing Knowledge Base, Specific Skills and Leadership

Working as a nurse on a medical ward, I frequently collaborate with other healthcare professionals in a Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) setting. The MDT approach has been found to improve patient outcomes by allowing professionals to pool their expertise, skills and knowledge in order to provide high-quality patient-centered care. My role as a nurse requires me to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals such as doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and dietitians. The importance of my role in the MDT is to be able to provide the necessary nursing care while also collaborating with other healthcare professionals.

To enhance my MDT work, I have developed a rationale for three key areas. Firstly, I have focused on developing my knowledge base in the area of dementia care. Research has shown that a multidisciplinary approach to caring for people with dementia can improve patient outcomes (Snyder et al., 2015). Secondly, I have improved my specific skills such as wound care management, intravenous cannulation and medication management. Lastly, in my role as a senior nurse, I have been able to demonstrate effective leadership in promoting teamwork and collaboration within the MDT.

  1. Teaching and Assessing Colleagues: Reflection

As a senior nurse on a medical ward, I often engage in teaching and assessing junior colleagues to improve their knowledge and skills. For instance, I recently taught a colleague about the management of wound dressings. To achieve this, I demonstrated the use of various dressings and how to apply them, while also explaining the rationale behind each type of dressing. After the demonstration, I assessed my colleague’s performance of the skill to determine her understanding and proficiency.

The experience was successful in promoting my colleague’s knowledge and skills. However, I also identified areas for improvement in my teaching approach. Specifically, I realized that I need to provide more opportunities for practice to reinforce the learning process.
