Reflect on how your own connection to this identity comes with privilege, oppression, and/or responsibilities to the broader public. As this is a self-reflection, I want you to be truly reflective not only about how your identity is individually important but also how your identity engages with the outside world. Be willing to engage with tough conversations/realizations with yourself and be willing to acknowledge the ways in which your identity or enactment of your identity may influence (sometimes negatively) others.

Some general pointers on how to approach this self-reflection.

When contemplating your identity, it is critical to consider the various components that comprise your identity, such as your race, gender, sexuality, religion, and so on. Consider how your experiences and understanding of these elements have changed over time, and how they have influenced your worldview.

It’s also critical to think about how your identity intersects with systems of privilege and oppression. For example, if you are a white person contemplating your racial identity, it is critical to recognize both the benefits of being white in a society that values whiteness and the ways in which your whiteness may contribute to the oppression of people of color.

Consider your responsibilities to the general public as well. How can you use your privilege and identity to make the world a more just and equitable place? What steps can you take to support marginalized communities and challenge oppressive systems?

Approach this self-reflection process with an open and curious mind. Be open to confronting uncomfortable truths and challenging your own assumptions and biases. Remember that this is a continuous process, and your understanding of your identity and its intersections with privilege and oppression will evolve over time.
