Thesis Statement: One of the Tenets of MDO, the use of Multi-Domain Formations, had a significant impact on the Battle of Mosul by allowing the coordination of ground, air, and cyber operations to achieve the mission objective.
Introduction:
Mosul was a critical operation in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The operation was carried out by Iraqi Security Forces with the assistance of a coalition led by the United States. MDO is a modern military concept that seeks to integrate land, air, sea, space, and cyber domains in order to gain a tactical advantage. Multi-Domain Formations (MDF) is one of MDO’s Tenets, which refers to the integration of ground, air, and cyber assets into a single formation to achieve a specific goal. This paper will look at how the use of MDF changed the outcome of the Battle of Mosul.
The Battle of Mosul began in October 2016 and lasted nine months. The operation’s goal was to liberate Mosul, which was ISIS’s last stronghold in Iraq. With the support of the US-led coalition, the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) launched a massive ground offensive to retake the city. The operation faced several challenges, including difficult terrain, a large number of civilians, and ISIS fighters using improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The use of MDF was critical to the success of the operation. MDF enabled the ISF to coordinate ground, air, and cyber operations in order to achieve the mission goal. The ISF established a Joint Operations Center (JOC) as the focal point for MDF operations. The JOC combined ground, air, and cyber assets into a single formation, allowing the ISF to maintain high situational awareness.
Air assets such as drones, attack helicopters, and fixed-wing aircraft assisted the ground forces. The air assets provided intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, which were critical to the success of the ground offensive. Close air support was also provided to ground forces, allowing them to advance against heavily fortified ISIS positions.
The use of cyber assets was also critical to the success of the operation. ISIS communication and command and control systems were disrupted by the ISF using cyber capabilities. The ISF was also able to conduct psychological operations, such as propaganda dissemination and deception operations, thanks to its cyber assets.
The Battle of Mosul demonstrated the effectiveness of Multi-Domain Formations in accomplishing a mission objective.
