The study utilized a phenomenological approach and recruited 10 adult patients who had undergone abdominal surgery.
The study findings revealed three main themes related to patients’ experiences of postoperative pain: (1) the physical impact of pain, (2) the emotional impact of pain, and (3) the impact of pain on daily activities. The study concluded that postoperative pain is a complex and multidimensional experience that can have a significant impact on patients’ overall well-being and recovery.
Critical Appraisal:
Both studies utilized appropriate qualitative research methods, such as purposive sampling, data collection through semi-structured interviews, and data analysis through thematic analysis or phenomenological analysis. However, the sample size of both studies was relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
Furthermore, both studies focused on the patient experience of postoperative pain, but did not include the perspectives of healthcare providers or family members, which could provide a more comprehensive understanding of postoperative pain management. Additionally, the studies were conducted in different countries, which may limit the transferability of the findings to other cultural contexts.
Conclusion:
The two qualitative research studies reviewed provide valuable insights into the patient experience of postoperative pain and highlight the importance of addressing patients’ concerns and fears related to pain management.
